Our Most Memorable Goals of the last 20 Years!
We are huge football fans here at Direct Soccer! As well as playing the game, managing and coaching teams, we love to watch the beautiful game too!
There’s been so many amazing goals scored in the last 20 years, from David Beckham’s timely freekick against Greece to send England to the 2002 World Cup, to Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time winner to take the Premier League title in 2012 for Manchester City. But here’s a selection of some of our most memorable goals from our 20 years in business along with why we remember them!
Pam Colbron (Operations Manager) supports Rangers but a favourite goal of Pam’s was from a team famous for wearing a darker shade of blue!
“An amazing goal, one that meant Scotland had done the double over France in our qualifying group!”
Andrew Nicoll (Warehouse) is also a Rangers supporter but picked out a goal from a Brazilian legend that ended the World Cup campaign in the Far East for the Three Lions!
“Ronaldinho scoring with a long range free kick over David Seaman’s head during the 2002 World Cup.”
Conar Kerr (Production) supports Dundee and Arsenal, and picked out a goal that brought joy to fans of the Dark Blues, and misery to their city rivals.
“Craig Wighton’s winner against Dundee United in 2016 that relegated the Arabs to the Championship!”
In the interest of fairness, it’s only right we show a clip from one of Dundee United’s greatest moments in the last 20 years, and Murray Bennett (Warehouse) is a massive fan of the Terrors and picked out the first goal that saw United go on to win the Scottish Cup in 2010.
“The opening goal that won the cup!”
Another fan of Dundee, David Matthew (IT), remembered a famous debut for an Argentine superstar at Dens Park.
“A global superstar making his home debut for Dundee, just out of rehab, Claudio Caniggia scored a brilliant chip against Motherwell in 2001”.
Our final three goals that we’ve loved have all been picked by some of our resident Manchester United fans, but they aren’t all goals scored by the Red Devils.
Mike Anderson (Sales), who isn’t shy of scoring some great goals himself during his career – sadly, we couldn’t get the VHS tape to show his moment of glory to our fans – picked out a great headed goal from one of the world’s best ever players.
“I love a good headed goal, so this one from Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League Final in 2008 against Chelsea is one I remember well!”
The Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho returns again, this time picked by Tom Slane (Warehouse).
“I was a big Barça fan, so Ronaldinho’s display against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in 2005 where he destroyed Barca’s arch rivals with 3 great goals was an iconic game for me.”
Our last goal in the list is one of the most famous goals in English football over the last 20 years, and was the “goal of the 20 years” for Andrew Sheach (Club Shops).
“Champions League final, the night of what would have been Sir Matt’s birthday, and United toiling against Bayern Munich. “The comeback completed in emphatic style by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win the European Cup and the Treble! Nothing since as a United fan has come close to this amazing game, the night I also saw my dad cry for the first time!”
