Hallowe'en Horror Show - Football's Scariest Kits Ever!

In the spirit of Hallowe'en, we thought we'd take a look at some of the most terrifyingly worst football kits to ever grace the professional game. After seeing these, please don't have any nightmares, that could be left to the players who had to wear these hideous creations.

HULL CITY - 1992

Now a top flight club, Hull City have kits that match their status in the game - this season's away kit a notable exception to the rule - however it wasn't always this way.  Back in 1992/93, the club played in the 2nd Division (now known as League One) at Boothferry Park, a traditional football ground as far removed from their present home of the KCOM Stadium as possible.  Hull City not only played bad, they looked terrible doing so, wearing a Tiger stripe kit.  The kit designer must have thought that as the club's nickname was the Tigers, a tiger looking kit was a surefire winner - sadly not!  To add to the humiliation, the strip's sponsor merely acted as a "BONUS" to the opposition fans to wind up the Hull players and supporters.

COVENTRY CITY - 1978 - 1980

Look at these three words and decide if they should ever be in the same sentence - brown, football, kit?  Most of you will say, never, right?  Sadly, Coventry City in the late 1970's didn't agree, unleashing a kit so horrifying it is regularly rated as one of the worst of all time.  The club did bring a lot of great innovations to the game, through their chairman, the late great Jimmy Hill, but sadly, this wasn't one of their better ideas.  Even when they re-released a special anniversary edition in 2009, it still didn't look right.  There's only one team that should wear brown and that's the NFL's Cleveland Browns, though as fans of the gridiron game will tell you, it isn't a colour that breeds success on the pitch.

[caption id="attachment_1715" align="alignleft" width="277"]A brown football kit? Can't possibly look bad can it? A fashion disaster for the 1970's, Coventry City style. A brown football kit? SCOTLAND - 2016

If you were one of the best in the world, you'd get away with it, but when you are Scotland and struggling to beat teams like Lithuania and Slovakia, why would you add to the ridicule and wear a shocking pink away kit?  Pink is one of the trendiest colours to wear, but for some football teams, it should be given a wide berth!  Of course, it isn't the first disaster Scotland have worn, take the examples of the away kit in the early 90's with the purple and pink jagged stripe across the chest, or the away kit of the Euro 2016 campaign that was white with yellow and pink hoops across the chest.

CELTIC - 1991

Over the years the Hoops have had some classy home kits, but for some inexplicable reason, decide to counter-act these with horrible away kits.  Here's exhibit A - the away kit for 1991 as worn by John Collins - that was a lime green and brown concoction that seemed to include a performance indicator of how Celtic's season was going to pan out - they finished 3rd in the league behind rivals Glasgow Rangers and Hearts.  Fast forward to 2016/17, and they haven't learnt a thing from this horror show, producing a Neon Pink away kit that pays homage to the colour of the tickets for the 1967 European Cup Final!  At least the team is playing well nowadays to get away with wearing this bright football strip!

SUNDERLAND - 2016/17

Moving south of the border now and to Sunderland.  The side that seem to be perennial relegation fighters in the Premier League have decided that this year they will add a bit of fizz to their battle and look like a cross between a can of Vimto and a packet of Parma Violets!  So far, it has been the brightest thing about the Black Cats season.

LIVERPOOL - 2013/14

Revealed, the real reason Luis Suarez wanted to leave Anfield at the end of the 2013/14 season?  He'd had enough of wearing horrible kits for the Reds while on their travels!  This 3rd kit, which combines black with a white and purple panel, is one of the club's worst in recent times.  It has companions though, the away kit of 1996/1997 was a cream shade called Ecru that fitted the image of the "Spice Boys" team perfectly, though it sadly just looked like the time you put yellow socks in the wash with your best white shirt, for that shirt to never be pure white again!

1860 MUNICH - every OCTOBER

October in Munich is traditionally when Oktoberfest takes place, a great festival of music and beer drinking.  Munich's second team like to pay tribute to the festival by bringing out a special kit every season to mark the occasion.  The shirts themselves can be ok on their own, but when you combine them with a pair of lederhosen inspired shorts in brown, and socks, you have one of the most hideous looking football strips on the planet!  Thankfully it is soon put away once Oktoberfest finishes and you can watch 1860 again for another 12 months before the next horror story is revealed!

BARCELONA - 2012/13

Even the best football team in the world can get it wrong when it comes to their kit choice.  Barcelona's away kit of 2012/13 made by Nike was a orange/yellow combination that faded from orange at the shoulders and chest to yellow and was completed by yellow shorts and socks, for a look that reminded you of a sunrise.  It isn't the only Barcelona away kit to be terrifying on the eyes though.  The 1991/92 away kit in Orange with blue and burgundy trim screams shiny polyester and probably came with a shellsuit to match!
