ENGLAND versus GERMANY - Euro '96 Semi-Final - More Years of Hurt for the Three Lions or redemption at last?
Euro '96 was a great tournament. Held in England, the home of football, the tournament was the first to include 16 teams and saw many star players from around Europe grace the pitches of some famous English football grounds. Hosts England saw off Spain in a penalty shoot-out in the Quarter Finals to set up a semi-final clash with arch rivals Germany and in an epic clash came a toe away from reaching the final. Unfortunately Gazza's outstretched boot just missed the ball heading into the German net and as per usual, English hearts were broken in the penalty shoot-out after current England boss Gareth Southgate's penalty was saved by the German keeper. This was one of the all-time classic international matches and we'd love to see it again, hopefully with a different outcome for English fans.
Celtic, under the stewardship of Martin O'Neill, went on a great run through to the UEFA Cup Final in 2003, beating the likes of Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers. Their opponents for the final in Seville were FC Porto, the Portuguese giants managed by Jose Mourinho (Wonder whatever happened to him?).
Unfortunately for the Glasgow giants and their loyal fans that travelled to Seville, their hopes of adding the UEFA Cup to the European Cup they won in 1967 were dashed as they lost 3-2 to a Porto side that, it has to be said, used dubious timewasting tactics towards the end to deny O'Neill's free-flowing Hoops victory.
CHELSEA versus MANCHESTER UNITED - 2008 Champions League Final
On a rainy night in Moscow, Chelsea were denied their first Champions League win when captain John Terry cruelly slipped taking his penalty that would have given the Stamford Bridge side the trophy had his spot-kick went in. Perhaps a rematch on a dry night might produce a different outcome?
WEST HAM UNITED versus LIVERPOOL - FA Cup Final, 2006
A match West Ham fans would love a chance at reversing the outcome. 2-0 up before being pegged back to 2-2, the Hammers then looked to have sealed the Cup at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium with another goal before Steven Gerrard took the game by the scruff of the neck and thundered a shot from long range in the last minute to send the game to extra-time. Liverpool struck a hammer blow to the Londoners by winning on penalties.
